This is what happens when you meet Norwegians abroad!

Are you going to "Syden" for the Summer?

Be prepared

Norwegians behave differently there

Like many other foreigners

During my first years in Norway

I felt like I was invisible

I was doing my best to smile to people

To acknowledge them

But got little reactions

Neighbors seemed to be waiting behind their doors

In order not to meet others in the hallways

If you would walk in a public area

Norwegians often would not greet

Or acknowledge others

Unless there was a reason to

I was in Croatia this week

Enjoying some days in the Sun

One of those neighbor that waits behind her door not to see others in the hallway

Suddenly came to me and started to speak for no reason

And was very motivated to have a conversation

A day later I heard people speaking Norwegian on the beach

I turned around and smiled

The mother and her daughter smiled back and we started to talk

Naturally

Without any awkwardness

We ended up talking for about 20 minutes

Some of their friends and family joined in

They included me in the conversation and we ended up spending several hours together

Enjoying the Sun and discussing all sorts or things

It seems like somehow

Being outside Norway

Provides a framework for socialization

What i called "Framed Activities"

Like in the mountains

Norwegians become accessible

They smile

They talk

For no practical reason

I had a great time with Norwegians abroad

I am on my way back to Norway now

To speak on NRK P1 Reiseradioen on Sunday

About how nice Norwegians are

And about my new book on Norwegians

That just got listed on the bestseller list

Enjoy!
